Research Interests

I am interested in the basic physics of the earthquake process—why faults slip like they do in earthquakes, and how fault rupture and slip are related to the generation of strong ground motion.  My longest-term focus has been in the dynamics of geometrically complex fault systems, but I also am working on the effects of thermal fluid pressurization on fault friction and the connection between earthquake dynamics and tsunamis.  My primary tool is numerical simulation.

Student Opportunities

I am interested in bringing into my laboratory talented, motivated M.S. and Ph.D. students who are interested in studying the physics of earthquakes and related phenomena.  A background in Geophysics or Geology is not necessary; All that is required is a desire to answer important questions concerning the physics of the earth.
